Preview of DEACON DIGEST for 1999

As we approach the Year 2000 Millennium, the major focus for Deacon Digest in 1999 will be on the development of new formation and curriculum guidelines for the U.S. diaconate and on diaconate involvement in the Millennium celebration. This will be reflected in the latest news developments affecting the diaconate, in the regular columns written by the leadership of the major deacon organizations in the U.S., in our Continuing Education Series, and in Feature Stories by and about deacons and their families.

Diaconate News

Deacon Digest communicates on a regular basis with the major diaconate organizations and offices, with columns written for each issue. An on-going communication with all diocesan offices is maintained through diocesan diaconate newsletters received. Diocesan newspapers are received on an exchange basis with Deacon Digest, as well as major Catholic magazines. From these many sources, Deacon Digest is able to provide the latest news on the diaconate on the diocesan, regional, national and international level.

Regular Columns

Deacon Digest in 1999 will again have regular columns in each issue written by Deacon John Pistone, for the Bishops' Committee on the Diaconate (BCD); by Deacon Tom Welch, for the National Association of Deacon Directors (NADD); and by Deacon Ralph Hueser, for the National Association of Deacon Organizations (NADO). In addition, Deacon Digest will continue the Ecumenical column written by Archdeacon Richard Pemble of the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago, in three issues, and the International column written by Msgr. Austin Hunt, Director of the Diaconate for the Archdiocese of Liverpool, England in the other three 1999 issues; he will report on news from the International Centre for the Diaconate (IDC) and on other diaconate activities outside of the United States and Canada.

Continuing Education Series

The primary focus of the 1999 Continuing Education Series in Deacon Digest will be to provide on-going formation for deacons and candidates as the new Formation and Curriculum Guidelines are developed. Articles will be written by members of the two Sub-Committees of the U.S. Bishops' Committee on the Diaconate working on the new formation and curriculum guidelines and on the revision of the 1984 Guidelines on the Diaconate.

A second article in each issue will focus on the Social Justice ministry of today's deacon, especially as related to the various social justice pastoral letters and documents issued by the U.S. bishops.

A third article in the 1999 Deacon Digest Continuing Education Series will focus on the wives of deacons and deacon candidates, with Mrs. Rae Pistone writing one article in each issue.

The fourth article in the 1999 Continuing Education Series will be written by Rev. Richard Gilbert, Executive Director of the World Pastoral Care Center. This series will focus on deacons as bereavement caregivers, and discuss pastoral resources, spiritual and educational programs, and all aspects of bereavement ministry.

Feature Stories

Each issue of Deacon Digest contains stories of diaconate ministry today, written by and about deacons and their families focusing on the diaconate ministry. We encourage our readers to write about their diaconate ministry also; please give us a call and we'll assist you with your article.
