There are approximately 24,063 deacons serving in 129 countries. Among this number are 511 deacons who are members of religious communities. The diaconate exists in about 1,060 of 2,696 dioceses worldwide.
45 (arch) diocese have more than 100 permanent deacons, totaling about 7,500. A further 25 (arch)diocese have between 80 to 100 deacons, totaling about 2,000. This means about 9,500 deacons serve in "only" 70 (arch)dioceses, with the remaining 12,500 deacons serving in about 990 dioceses.
In 35 of the 180 dioceses and eparchates of the Eastern Churches, there are about 250 permanent deacons, of which about 180 serve in North America. It should also be noted many dioceses of the Eastern Churches included subdeacons in their data. The above photo is from the Corel Galleria at www.corel.com.
