Guest Book - 2002
I stumbled across your site whilst researching my next Formation essay (for fellow Wonersh students the one to be set on Sunday 6 January 2002). I am a first year Formation student for the Permanent Diaconate in the Archdiocese of Southwark (UK). I can see myself making more and more visits to your site and its links during my time in Formation and after my Ordination, God willing, in 2004. Please keep improving this resource.

I am very impressed with the site which I became aware of from www.cathtelecom.com. I had a look at the draft guidelines, where on page 22 it has "the ministry of the deacon is no mere stepping stone on the road to the Priesthood". In the same way the ministry of "instituted lector" should not be seen as a stepping stone on the road to the Diaconate. I have written about instituted lectors on http://www.romanrite.com/Lectors. In the guidelines 1-22-3 it has a requirement for applying to be a deacon is "... his certificate of baptism and confirmation, receipt of the ministries of lector and acolyte, and a certificate of studies...". No mention is made for a certificate for being a lector. But the Code of Canon Law, Canon 1050.3, requires "certificates of the reception of baptism, of confirmation and of the ministries mentioned Can. 1035" (1997 Harper Collins translation). So I hope this is modified so that the non-ordained ministries are also certified, so that in accordance with Canon 156 "The provision of any office is to be made in writing." With the education this site provides on deacons I expect it will also lead to a better understanding of the non-ordained ministries of instituted lector and acolyte.

I have been looking for a site like this. I not only would like to take advantage of the homilies of others when preparing my own, but have about 300 homilies on my computer that I have delivered over the past 16 years. I was ordained by Cardinal Bernardine in 1986 for the Archdiocese of Chicago and serve in Immaculate Heart of Mary parish on Chicago's North Side. At my ordination a good friend who has been more or less our parish photographer stood up at the exactly right time and took a picture as the Cardinal was imposing hands on me. I am very proud of this picture and, if you would like, I could send a copy. I am [affectionately, I hope] known in my parish as the Archdeacon, being the first to be ordained in the parish which now has two other deacons, one in his sixth year and the other in his second. I am coming into full-communion with the Roman Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. I was a consecrated diaconal minister (think "permanent deacon) in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. I am meeting with a representative of the Archdiocese of Washington after Easter 2002 to discuss the possibility of becoming an ordained deacon in the Roman Catholic Church. I just finished the aspirancy year and have applied for formation for the diaconate in the Archdiocese for Baltimore. I think the website is fantastic. It is hard to find a good source of information about the history, theology, and helpful information about the permanent diaconate.

Congratulations on your new endeavour. Now, more than ever in the present day history of the Catholic Church it is important to establish a cyber community of all deacons, be they in the Eastern or Roman Churches. God bless! George Sytnyk, Deacon Eparchy of Toronto, Canada

I am a permanent Deacon within the Archdiocese of Toronto... Is there a chat room where deacons can converse with other brother deacons from around the world? If so could you tell me where I might find it on the net. Is there also a prayer request page for deacons as well, and if so where? Thanking you in advance and may God Bless Deacon Gary Toronto, Canada

Dear Webmaster
Whilst I think the concept of your site is very much of use to Permanent Deacons and those of us in Formation, it would be even more useful if it was regularly updated.
Small things like "View Guest Book" has not been updated to include 2002 and we are now nearly in 2003!
I must say the the Links do make it a useful portal to other sites but it would be extremely useful for this site to be the homepage for all things diaconal.
Sorry to be critical but I hope it is taken positively.
